The Swiss healthcare system attaches great importance to the idea of solidarity in basic insurance. In other words: In basic insurance, all adults pay the same premium in the premium area, regardless of whether they are sick or healthy, young or old, male or female. You are one of the lucky and healthy people. However, in case of illness, you do not have to pay high premiums. This so-called solidarity principle is anchored in the Health Insurance Act. You have the certainty that your medical bills will be covered in case of emergency and that you will not get into financial distress as a result.

Our advertising measures primarily serve to communicate innovative offers and services and thus to attract new customers to us. Only if an insurance company manages to attract new customers every year can it guarantee stability and security for its policyholders. Ultimately, this benefits all Sanitas policyholders.
Advertising can also make an important contribution to the cost-conscious behavior of our customers: since the introduction of our Sanitas portal and the associated communication, over 300,000 insureds have switched to electronic and thus paperless communication with Sanitas. Last but not least, our figures show that it is virtually impossible to save money by doing without advertising: At Sanitas, advertising expenses account for a few per mille of a monthly premium. With an average monthly premium, that's less than one franc. If we were to eliminate all advertising expenses, this would hardly be noticeable in the premiums.
Health insurers are required by law to build up reserves. While some insurers pay out any surpluses directly to their basic policyholders, Sanitas and the majority of health insurers focus on offering their policyholders premiums that are as stable as possible in the long term. Moreover, the costs for the complex administration of a premium refund are ultimately borne by the insured. We review the circumstances of a premium refund annually as part of the premium submission process.
